Sundance Film Festival 2020

Though the cheer of the holiday season may be over, there’s still plenty of glitz and glamour ahead as the iconic Sundance Film Festival heads to Park City from January 23 through February 2, 2020.

What is the Sundance Film Festival?

Founded by acclaimed actor Robert Redford, the Sundance Film Festival is a multi-day celebration of independent cinema. It showcases new work from independent filmmakers from the US and internationally and hosts various daily discussions, workshops and live music events. Hundreds of films have found their footing at Sundance and went on to enjoy critical acclaim and widespread recognition. As the largest festival of its kind in the US, Sundance attracts more than 125,000 people annually and is open to the public.

If you’d like to attend for the sheer star power, you’ll be in good company. Though the list of A-list stars who attended in 2019 is long and varied, a few include Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Viola Davis, Zac Efron and of course, Robert Redford.

History

Interestingly, the Sundance Film Festival began simply. In the early 1960s, Robert Redford was taking a cross-country motorcycle trip when discovered the remote and rugged beauty of Provo Canyon and Mt. Timpanogos. By the late 1960s, he had purchased 5,000 acres and named it after his seminal role in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. Later that year, he opened the Sundance Mountain Resort.

In the early 1980s, the Sundance Institute was launched, as a means of giving a voice to the unheard stories of independent filmmakers.

The first Sundance Film Festival was held in 1985. In the 35 years since it has offered a platform from which the careers of leading filmmakers have been launched. Some of these now-household names include Steven Soderberg, Quentin Tarantino and the Coen Brothers.

The Movies of Sundance

You may be surprised to know that, through the decades, some of the most celebrated films in terms of box office appeal and Academy Awards nominations and wins got their start at the Sundance Film Festival.

Films such as “Napoleon Dynamite”, “Four Weddings and a Funeral”, “Little Miss Sunshine”, “The Usual Suspects” and “Reservoir Dogs” all got their start at Sundance.

Tips and Tricks

To survive Sundance 2020, please follow these simple tips:

Don’t forget that Park City is COLD. Daytime highs average between 12 and 33 degrees. Remember, layers are your friend, always have extra socks and gloves and most of all, wear appropriate shoes.

Do HYDRATE, HYDRATE, HYDRATE. Park City is at an elevation of 7,000’. It’s very dry and you’re likely not used to that altitude.

Speaking of altitude, don’t drink alcohol and be prepared to take it easy for the first 24 hours. Allow your body to adjust so you don’t develop altitude sickness. Oh, and did we mention HYDRATE? Drink another glass of water.

Plan your schedule in advance, without being too rigid and don’t forget to factor in commuting time.

Make sure you have healthy snacks on you at all times. And water.

There is no “right” way to do Sundance. Don’t feel compelled to follow the crowd. Find the films and programs that speak to you and participate in those.

Most of all, enjoy the excitement and anticipation in the air. You may well be the first to discover the next great film and/or filmmaker of our time.  How’s that for bragging rights??

Looking for Winter Fun Other than Skiing? We’ve Got Ideas!

Though Park City is renowned and beloved for its alpine skiing, there are plenty more ways to enjoy the snow if the thought of whizzing down a mountain at 20 mph (or faster!) is not for you.

Here are a few of them:

Cross Country Skiing in Park City, UTNordic (Cross Country) Skiing

Did you know that cross country skiing is way, way older than Alpine skiing? It’s 22,000 years old, to be exact!

Here are a couple of interesting facts about cross country that is sure to get you started in this fun, invigorating leisure activity.

  1. It burns more calories per hour than any other sport. ‘Nuff said.
  2. Apart from the initial investment, it’s free! Explore endless trails without spending any additional money.
  3. It’s a great way to connect with friends and family. Unlike many sports that leave you too winded to talk, cross country skiing has you gliding along while enjoying easy conversation.

Two free trails in Park City are Basin Recreation and Round Valley.

Snowshoeing Snowshoes - Park City, UT

The biggest difference between cross country skiing and snowshoeing is that snowshoeing has a much smaller learning curve. With cross country skiing, you’ll have to learn the appropriate gait and movement. With snowshoeing, it’s far more similar to just walking or hiking.

A few fun facts about snowshoeing:

  • While not as old as cross country skiing, snowshoeing can trace its roots back about 5,000 years to central Asia.
  • Snowshoeing is considered a form of hiking. Practitioners of this activity say, “If you can walk, you can snowshoe.”
  • It’s an excellent cardio workout, burning as many calories as cross country skiing.
  • There are numerous trails in Park City to enjoy snowshoeing.

While perhaps not exactly an alternative to downhill skiing, the thought of ice skating conjures up such lovely thoughts, like Christmas time, festive music and hot chocolate. If you’ve ever enjoyed the movie Serendipity, then ice skating surely holds a special romantic spot in your heart.  The Park City Resort Center Ice Rink is open to the public and offers all-day passes and skate rentals.

Snowbiking in Park City, UTSnowbiking

Though snowbiking is not as well know as some of the other winter activities listed above, it’s growing quickly in popularity. As Park City is a haven for mountain biking, thanks to its 400 miles of maintained trails, it only stands to reason that enthusiasts don’t want to give up their beloved sport when the snow starts falling.

Enter the fat tire bike, more commonly known (and probably more PC) as a snowbike! These are high performance bicyles with special oversized tires to easily get you through snowy terrain.

If you’d like to try your hand at this new-ish sport, you can rent a snowbike at one of several outfitters, such as Pedego Park City, Storm Cycles, or Jans Mountain Outfitters. Either take an experienced guide along or simply get their tips for the best trails.

TubingSnowtubing in Park City, UT

You thought tubing was just a summer sport, didn’t you? It brings up mental images of bathing suits and rivers. Well, here’s a whole new way to think of this fun sport!

This family-friendly activity consists of a giant inflatable ring, a rope tow and an exhilarating ride down the hill! It’s perfect for both kids and kids-at-heart.

Give it a try at Gorgoza Park or Soldier Hollow

However you decide to spend your outdoor time on your Park City vacation, we hope it creates wonderful, lifetime memories for you and your loved ones.

10 Things You Didn’t Know About Park City

Park City, Utah
  1. 10:00 PM Whistle

Remember that old commercial asking, “It’s 10:00. Do you know where your children are?” They may well have taken their cue from the 10:00 electric siren that rings every night. It started in 1905, as a way to warn Park City’s young people about curfew.

Local Population

For a resort town as nationally and internationally renowned as Park City, you’d expect a sizeable year-round population. Surprisingly, the permanent population of Park City is just 8504, according to 2019 estimates. Interestingly, today’s population is not far off from the population of 1884, when Park City was incorporated.

Sundance Film Festival

Similar to the beloved song, Park City comes alive with the sights of films and celebrities. Each January, Park City is joyfully inundated with 50,000 celebrities, movie executives and film connoisseurs for the largest film festival in the US.

Park City was Founded on Humble Beginnings

Park City was discovered around the time of the completion of the Transcontinental Railroad, by soldiers panning for silver. For many years, it was a silver mining town, even gaining some notoriety as the home of the Ontario Mine, widely considered to be the greatest mine in the world.

You Snooze, You Lose

The Deer Valley Resort limits the number of skiers on the busiest days of the year to avoid possible overcrowding on the slopes. This practice contributed to its receipt of the coveted #1 Ski Resort designation by reader of Ski Magazine.

A Foodie Paradise

Even though Park City has less than 10,000 year-round residents, that doesn’t stop it from being a foodie haven. Over 150 restaurants make their home here, with cuisines ranging from simple fast-food sandwiches to Forbes Travel Guide Four Star Award recipients.

Free Transit System

This city-wide system makes it easy to enjoy being a tourist and take in all the sights without worry. It stops at all the hot spots, including Kimball Junction, the historic district and recreational attractions. For some added fun, The Main Street Trolley also offers free rides every day from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m.

Olympic History

Both Deer Valley and Park City Mountain Resort were official venues for the 2002 Winter Olympics. Here’s an interesting information nugget: Of the 28 medals earned in those Olympics, 14 of them have ties to Park City, either by virtue of residency, training venue or education.

A Seeming Contradiction Regarding Alcohol

The first legal whiskey distillery since Prohibition was opened in Park City in 2009 and promotes itself as the world’s first ski-in gastro pub. However, Park City has some pretty stringent rules on alcohol consumption – no more than 1.5 oz of liquor in a drink, no happy hours and restaurant bartenders cannot make drinks in view of customers.

Year Round Fun

While Park City is world-renowned for its winter skiing, there is plenty to do here year round. Hiking on more than 150 trails encompassing 8,000 acres of open space, mountain biking, summer concert series, fishing and simply enjoying the stunning mountains views at the 7,000’ elevation.

There are so many more wonderfully unique things to love about Park City that you’ll just have to get here to experience them all! When you do, let us help you find the perfect accommodations for your first-of-many adventures in Park City.
